How cumulative GPA is calculated

Your cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted average of all grades earned throughout your academic career. It is calculated by multiplying the grade point value of each course (e.g. A = 4.0, B = 3.0) by its credit hours to get quality points.

The sum of all quality points is then divided by the total number of credit hours attempted. Because GPA is weighted by credits, a 4-credit course has a much larger impact on your cumulative average than a 1-credit course.

The stabilization effect of credit hours

As you complete more credit hours, your cumulative GPA becomes increasingly stable and harder to shift. This is because each new course represents a smaller fraction of your total academic history.

For example, a freshman with only 15 credits can raise their GPA dramatically with one good semester. However, a senior with 100 credits will find that even a perfect 4.0 semester will only raise their cumulative GPA by a fraction of a point. This is the stabilization effect.
